Salford family bids farewell to social housing home after 76 years

Salix Homes resident Mary Jones, and her son
Meet Mary – one of our longest serving tenants who’s lived in her Salford home for almost eight decades. Mary was just 18 when she first moved in with her mum and siblings in 1948.

Known as the ‘house with the red roses’, it has provided a safe and happy home for three generations of the Jones family. Mary’s story is a powerful example of the profound difference that social housing can make in people’s lives, providing stability, security, and a foundation for generations.

Now after 76 years, Mary is moving into a retirement village marking the end of an extraordinary chapter for the Jones family and a house that has been a cornerstone of their lives for so many years.

We’d like to thank Mary and her family for taking such pride in their home over the years and we wish Mary much happiness in her new home.

Cleaning up communities and connecting with customers at WIN Day

Salix Homes teams out in the community
Salix Homes teams recently hit the streets of Salford to make a positive impact in your communities and to connect with you. The recent Working in Neighbourhood (WIN) Day saw teams from all across our organisation coming together to engage with our customers and communities.

Armed with litter pickers and bin bags, our colleagues rolled up their sleeves and cleared an impressive 48 bags of rubbish from neighbourhoods across Salford.

In addition to the cleanup activities, our teams also took the opportunity to knock on doors and engage with customers as part of our Getting to Know You campaign. This allowed us to foster stronger connections our customers, make sure we have up to date contact details and gain a better understanding of your needs and concerns.

Cleaner, greener homes at Greenhaus

Salix Homes' new Greenhaus development
Our brand new eco-friendly apartment complex, Greenhaus, is now finished and has delivered 96 sustainable, affordable homes to Chapel Street in the heart of Salford.

The monthly cost of heating and hot water at Greenhaus is expected to be less than half of that for a similar-sized new build home with a gas boiler.

Work starts at Willohaus

We have started building our second Passivhaus-certified, eco-friendly apartment complex, Willohaus.

Willohaus will have 100 high-quality, affordable, and sustainable one and two-bedroom apartments, located on Peru Street in Salford.

Meet your housing officer
Our Housing Officers are here to help with anything you need, whether it’s an issue related to anti-social behaviour or you require additional support. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact your dedicated Housing Officer at any time.

Every month, we’ll introduce you to one of our Housing Officers. This month, say hello to Alison your Housing Officer for Lower Broughton.

Alison was part of the Community Safety team for three years before becoming a Housing Officer. When asked what she loves about her role, Alison told us, “I love helping people and making our community a better place to live in.”

Household Support Fund

Household Support Fund
The Household Support Fund is help from your local council with essential costs.

Round five of the Household Support Fund launched on Tuesday, 2 April 2024 and will run to Monday, 30 September 2024.

This phase of the scheme is dedicated to helping the people of Salford with food, fuel, and energy, especially during these challenging times of rising costs.

You don’t need to receive benefits to apply for support but you will need to show that you could use a helping hand to purchase the items you need.

Our Furniture Recycling Scheme: Giving unwanted items a new home

Salix Homes Furniture Recycling Scheme
There are many positives to our Furniture Recycling Scheme. It collects unwanted furniture, household items, and white goods so we can give them free of charge to our customers who need them the most.

It’s here to help you out, save you money, and reduce waste.

If you’ve got any household items that could go to a home that needs them, email us at environmental.maintenance@salixhomes.co.uk or if you would like to use this service, call us on 0800 218 2000.

MySalix - Your Salix Homes online account
MySalix is your online Salix Homes account where you can manage your tenancy anytime with a range of services at your fingertips.

24 hours a day, and without the need to call us, you can:

– Book a repair
– Receive real-time updates about exactly who’s going to do your repair and when to expect them
– Check your rent statement and make payments
– Report problems and track your cases in real-time
– Update your contact details and let us know if you need assistance if we visit your home, like allowing you extra time to answer the door
