Salix Homes helps elderly tenants keep warm and well

Next month (November) staff will be carrying out home visits to elderly tenants as part of our annual ‘Keep Warm, Keep Well’ scheme, which is now in its sixth year.

This year we will be targeting tenants aged over 80 living in the Broughton area, in a bid to help them prepare for the cold, winter months.

Customer support workers will visit more than 100 elderly tenants to hand out blankets, offer advice on how to stay warm and healthy during cold periods, what to do if they trip or fall, and ensure people are claiming the benefits they’re entitled to.

We have also teamed up with energy switching specialist Community Switch, who will be ensuring elderly tenants are getting their best deal from their energy supplier and supporting them to ‘switch’ to a better deal.

In the past six months, Community Switch has helped more than 400 Salix Homes’ tenants save more than £25,000 on their fuel bills, by switching providers.

Sue Sutton, chief executive at Salix Homes, said: We have enjoyed an unseasonably mild autumn so far, but the winter weather will soon be upon us and we want to ensure our most elderly and vulnerable tenants don’t feel alone this winter and know that help is available.

The cold weather can add to the financial worries of older people and the aim of our successful ‘Keep Warm, Keep Well’ scheme is to ease those worries. When money is tight many people will consider turning their heating off, but by teaming up with Community Switch and offering advice for keeping warm, we can ensure that our elderly and most vulnerable customers are not afraid to put their heating on when the cold weather starts to bite.

On Friday November 7, Salix Homes employees will also be lending a hand at Salford Food Bank at Mocha Parade, Broughton, when visitors to the food bank will be given a free hot meal.
