Pupils ‘bin it in Broughton’ to help keep community clean

Salford schoolchildren have joined forces to stamp out littering in a campaign to keep their area tidy.

Year 10 pupils at Albion Academy launched the Bin it Broughton campaign to educate primary school children about littering and the benefits of recycling in a bid to improve their neighbourhood.

Salix Homes helped support the project with a £500 grant from our ‘Your Salix, Your Say’ fund which provides grants to worthwhile community initiatives, as chosen by the public.

As part of the campaign, the Albion Academy pupils, all aged 14 and 15, devised a play to tackle littering which they performed at local primary schools.

They also worked with Year Two children to design a logo for a sticker campaign against littering.

The winner was seven-year-old St George’s Primary School pupil Ellie Fielding, whose winning design will now feature on more than 100 bins across the city.

Last month, pupils also organised a litter pick with their teachers and parents to tidy up areas close to their schools.

Albion Academy pupil Euanne Roberts,15, said: “We thought by educating the younger generation on the effects of litter in the environment this would have a positive impact. Taking part in this project has been a fun and rewarding experience.”

The inititative was led by Contour Homes, in partnership with Salix Homes, The Broughton Trust’s Irwell Valley Sustainable Communities Project and Salford City Council.
