Double awards success at Northern Housing Awards 2022

Salix Homes has scooped two prestigious accolades in this year’s Northern Housing Awards.

We were hailed the winner of the Best Approach to Building Safety category in recognition of ourefforts to champion building safety on a national scale following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

OurPoets development in Swinton also won Regeneration Scheme of the Year – a project that has transformed an historic part of Salford, delivering new social and affordable housing.

Sue Sutton, chief executive at Salix Homes, said; “We are absolutely over the moon to be recognised in the Northern Housing Awards, which celebrate the achievements of the social housing sector in the North of England.

“We’re particularly proud to win the building safety category as this is an area where we feel our actions to champion the calls for change within the sector are making a real difference to ensure the safety of residents and buildings up and down the country.

“This award feels all the more poignant as we approach the five-year anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy, and we hope the new reforms in the Building Safety Act and Fire Safety Act will really raise the bar on building safety on a national level and ensure there can never be another Grenfell.”

Since the Grenfell Tower tragedy, Salix Homes has raised safety standards within its own properties, advised government bodies on future recommendations, and has been piloting and implementing the reforms in the new Building Safety Act.

Ms Sutton added: “We’re also incredibly proud that our Poets development in Swinton has been recognised. Poets was our very first new-build development, but what makes it even more special, is that it was never just our regeneration project – it belonged to the community, and they helped us to shape and deliver their vision from the very start, so this award win is testament to the hard work of everyone involved.”

There was also a win for the Social Housing Tenants Climate Jury, launched by the Northern Housing Consortium (NHC), which is a ground-breaking initiative Salix Homes has been part of to understand how tenants, social housing providers and others can work together to tackle climate change in social housing.

The winners of the Northern Housing Awards were announced at an awards ceremony at the Emirates Old Trafford yesterday evening (Thursday, May 17). You can view the full list of winners here.
