Community Champion honoured with Role Model in Ageing Award
A good neighbour who goes above and beyond to bring her community together has been recognised for her outstanding efforts with a prestigious award.
Julie Austin, a resident at our Broomedge sheltered housing scheme for the over 55s, was nominated by our Senior Housing Officer, Robyn Green, for a Role Model in Ageing Award for her ongoing efforts to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for her neighbours in Salford.
This category recognises older adults who show that ageing can be vibrant, diverse, and full of possibility.
In her nomination, Robyn said: ” Julie lives in an over-55s community and is passionate about keeping community spirit thriving. From hosting a Christmas Day meal for her neighbours to decorating communal areas for Yom Kippur so her Jewish neighbours felt celebrated, Julie consistently brings people together. Thank you, Julie, for your years of work within the community and the impact you have made.”
Julie is an advocate for ensuring older residents in her community still have access to a range of engaging and diverse activities and is a credit to the community.
She said: “It doesn’t matter if only one person turns up, it’s one person that we’ve made a difference to, and I will never stop doing that”.
The Celebrating Diversity in Ageing awards is organised by The Beautiful Minds – Embracing Ageing, a community-based interest group which provides emotional support to elderly people (aged 60 and over) who are looking to connect and network with others in the community.
Congratulations to Julie on her well-deserved win.
