Coming soon: Sky Gardening Challenge

People gardening on a balconyThe National Trust is launching their Sky Gardening Challenge on 3rd April, working with community organisations and housing associations across Greater Manchester to encourage and support people to get greening their balconies and window boxes.

They’re going to be working with Salix Homes, so there will be lots of opportunities to get involved on your doorstep.

Whether you’re a nature novice or planting pro – if you have a balcony or window box, you can get involved and green the city above the ground.

Gardening support will be offered to those who sign up, with a balcony gardening guide, a monthly newsletter, regular emails and the chance to get involved with a competition later in the summer.

There will also be balcony gardening workshops for Salix Homes residents held throughout the spring – keep an eye out for more information about these.

You’ll be able to register for free between Thursday 3rd April and Wednesday 30th July to get started.

More details on how to register will be coming soon.

A participant from the small-scale Sky Gardening Challenge pilot in 2024 said “The impact of our balcony garden extends beyond its small size. It serves as a peaceful retreat for us, offering a place to relax and reconnect with nature. We are lucky to be looking out to such a lush green space right outside of our balcony.”

Another said, “It’s like a pocket of peace in a busy town centre, a little piece of the countryside.”

“Nature is crucial for our mental and physical health. Last year people told us that they’d created peaceful retreats that helped them to reconnect with nature in the city,” says Tor Emms, Project Manager for the National Trust’s Sky Gardening Challenge. “This year we’d love even more people to green their balconies and window boxes and spread the joy of nature around Greater Manchester.”

Save Salford City Radio

A group of volunteers from Salford City RadioBack in October we shared that we at Salix Homes are proud to back the campaign to support 94.4FM Salford City Radio – a station run by incredible volunteers from all walks of life. We’re asking for your support again.

This station is a vital lifeline for many, offering a sense of purpose, community, and support.

Through our show, “Let’s Talk Housing,” we’ve seen firsthand the positive impact the station has on our community and the important platform it provides for voices that may not always be heard.

However, the station is currently facing financial challenges and urgently needs sponsorship and advertising support. We’re urging all local Salford organisations to come together and help in this critical time.

If Salford City Radio were to close, it would silence important voices and dismantle a vital network of support for many.

Donations can be made via their Crowdfunder page.
