Salford Flood information

Last updated: 08 December 2016

Boxing Day 2015 was a day where hundreds of Salfordians were hit by the worst floods the city has seen in decades.

Since the disaster, that struck more than 300 of our properties, we have completed a major repairs and improvement programme to all these homes, including a number of flood resilience measures.

The multi-million pound refurbishment has seen new kitchens, skirting boards, vinyl floors, radiators and decorating to many of the affected properties.

Homes have also received up to £5,000 of flood resilient improvements to better protect properties against future floods.

Resilience work included the installation of flood-resistant external doors, blocked-up openings and waterproof treatment to external walls.

We would like to thank everyone for their patience during this tough period.

We'd urge all those who were affected and those who live close to the River Irwell to:

  • Sign up for flood warnings - Floodline Warnings Direct is a free service which sends you a message when flooding is expected and may affect your property. Register by calling the Floodline number on 0345 988 1188 or visiting the Environment Agency website.
  • Think about insurance - It is important to remember your rent payment does not include any cost for insurance of your personal belongings, furniture, carpets, or household goods. The majority of tenants affected during the Boxing Day floods, did not have contents insurance. We can help provide home contents insurance through the Salix Homes scheme which could cost you as little as £1.98 per week for standard cover*. For more information, either fill out a form online at www.salixhomes.org/insurance, email enquiries@salixhomes.co.uk or call us on 0800 218 2000. (*£1.98 per week is based on £9,000 of standard contents cover. £1.68 per week for people 60 and over is based on £6,000 worth of standard contents cover. Quote is subject to eligibility criteria. Premiums quoted include insurance premium tax (IPT) at the appropriate rate.)
  • Visit Salford City Council website - Salford City Council has produced a useful booklet with handy hints and tips to help you prepare for future flooding. Click here to download the floodpack.
