Award honour for playwright Shelagh Delaney

For the second year running housing association Salix Homes will present the Shelagh Delaney Creativity Star in her memory at its annual Salix Stars Awards – which recognise the unsung heroes of Salford.

Salford-born Shelagh, who grew up on Duchy Road, was one of the first working class, female playwrights and penned critically acclaimed play A Taste of Honey when she was 18- years-old.

Salix Homes, which last year unveiled a plaque on Shelagh’s childhood home which it now owns, first introduced the new award last year to celebrate the inaugural year of Shelagh Delaney Day – which is also making a comeback in November.

Lee Sugden, chief executive at Salix Homes, said: “Shelagh Delaney is one of Salford’s most famous daughters – but it’s only in the past year that more people have begun to realise just how much she achieved.

“We want Shelagh’s legacy to be remembered forever in Salford, so we are very proud to be bring back the Shelagh Delaney Creativity Star in her honour, which we hope will recognise the abundance of creative talent in this great city.”

The award will be presented to a group or individual from Salford who have shown exceptional creative talent and innovation.

Handing over the crown from last year is Charlestown Community Camera Club who scooped the award in recognition of their photographic talents.

The other categories in this year’s Salix Stars Awards include Aim High Star, Spirit of Salford Star, Young Rising Star and Best Green Star.

Nominations close on August 16 and the awards ceremony takes place at The Lowry, Salford Quays on Friday, November 27.
