The jobs club - with a difference

Whether you’re looking for work, need help with money management or want some advice on health matters, Claremont and Weaste Opportunities Club is here to help.

The club was launched two years ago and is run by a group of volunteers at Hope Library in Weaste.

While its aim is to help people into work, it is so much more than just a jobs club.

In addition to helping people with job searching, interview techniques and CV writing, their team of skilled volunteers can also offer advice and support on a range of issues from budgeting and debt management to health advice and counselling.

The club, which is supported by Salix Homes, has a great success rate for helping people to improve their skills and transform their lives.

Volunteer Kay Fairhurst, who is a retired community worker, said: “Every single person who has been through our doors has gone on to get a job, undertake training or do volunteer work or recieve support.

“Getting a job might be the end product, but we help people to recognise their own skills and then build on those.

“We often have people coming in who don’t realise what skills they already have, but they can actually do a lot more than they thought and once we help them build their confidence and they get to that point then anything is possible.”

David Nutall has been attending the club for the past three months while he looks for work.

He said: “I’m looking for work and the support I get here has been a great help particularly the one-on-one support around interview techniques and preparing for interviews.”

The club is supported by a range of partners who are on hand to provide free advice and support including Salford CVS, the Credit Union, the Health Improvement Service and Salford Women’s Centre.

The club meets every Thursday at Hope Library, Eccles Old Road, from 10am-12pm and people can just turn up on the day.
