Who will be crowned Spirit of Salford?

Salix Homes has announced the finalists for our annual Salix Stars Awards and this year there’s a special category to honour someone who encompasses the city’s true spirit.

The Spirit of Salford Star Award will be given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the community and gone above and beyond to make a real and long-lasting difference.

The five finalists have been chosen by a specialist panel of judges and it’s now up to the people of Salford to vote for their favourite.

The finalists include Keri Muldoon, 39, a mum-of-two from Lower Broughton, who has been instrumental in the battle to save the Sure Start Centre at River View Primary School, and Janet Lawson, an 84-year-old charity fundraiser from Higher Broughton, who has raised hundreds of pounds for charity despite battling cancer herself.

Sarah Whitehead, 29, from Ordsall, who volunteers at domestic abuse support group The Salford Survivor Project, has also been shortlisted after impressing judges with her commitment to helping the most vulnerable people in society.

Also in the running are Rabbi Yisroel Cohen and his wife Chana Cohen, from Higher Broughton, who run a foodbank in Salford, and Roy Marsh, chairman of the Southgarth Residents Association, who has dedicated more than 20 years of his life to improving his local community.

Sue Sutton, chief executive at Salix Homes, said: This is the first year that we have introduced the Spirit of Salford Star to our annual tenant awards because we want to celebrate everything that’s so great about Salford and the people who help make this famous city so special.

The finalists in this category all have the Spirit of Salford and whoever wins, they should all be very proud of their achievements and the lasting difference they are making to our city and the people in it.
I’d urge everyone to make sure they use their vote and help us crown the Spirit of Salford.

Voting will close on Monday, October 13. Click here to cast your vote or call Sarah McNally on 0161 779 8028.

The winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony at The Lowry, Salford Quays on Wednesday, November 19.
